It is illegal to throw fluorescent and HID lamps in the trash!!!

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control warns that an improperly discarded fluorescent lamp is a violation of hazardous waste laws (California Code of Regulations, Title 22, Chapter 13) that can result in fines and prosecution.

The DTSC recommends implementing a lamp management plan to help business stay compliant with universal waste regulations. There are two main approaches for business to manage spent lamps: Mass Re-Lamping and Failed Lamp Replacement.

Mass Re-Lamping replaces all the linear fluorescent lamps in the building before most of them burn out. This approach minimizes labor costs and places the majority of spent lamp management in the hands of lamp management professionals.

Failed Lamp Replacement is simply replacing lamps as they fail. No matter which method is used, every building should have a plan for replacing and recycling spent lamps. This plan should include pickup and recycle services, designating an accumulation area, proper signage, training of proper disposal for all employees who handle or manage universal waste, and documentation (recycle certificates).
